Capayán Department

The department Capayán located in the south of the province of Catamarca in northwestern Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered on the north by the departments Ambato and Poman, on the east by the departments Fray Mamerto Esquiú, Valle Viejo, Ancasti and La Paz, and on the west by the province of La Rioja.

The capital of the department is Huillapima.

Population

According to estimates by the INDEC, the population of the department of Capayán increased from 14,137 (2001) to 15,128 inhabitants in 2005.
