The Māori named the Cape Brett Peninsula in their language Rakaumangamanga mai Hawaiki ( mutatis mutandis home to many tribes ). The seven different mountain peaks that make the peninsula from the sea like a dragon lying look with spikes on his back, symbolizing the seven Waka (large canoes in the South Seas ) of Māori with whom they left their mystical homeland Hawaiki about 1000 years ago.
