Cape Froward

Cape Froward (Spanish Cabo Froward ) is the southernmost point of mainland America. The cape is located in Chilean territory on the Brunswick Peninsula in the Región de Magallanes y Antártica Chilena de la ( province of Magallanes, Punta Arenas commune ), 90 km south of Punta Arenas. The journey around the Cape Froward represents the southernmost point on the Strait of Magellan dar.

The cape was named (English froward = defiantly ) in January 1587 by Thomas Cavendish, who named it after the weather conditions with heavy rain and winds.

At 365 m high hill overlooking the Cape in 1987, Pope John Paul II was built to honor a 24 -meter high metal cross ( Cruz de los Mares, ' cross the sea " ). In 1913, a cross was erected at this place for the first time, but fell over the years, several crosses the weather to victims.
