Cape Malay

The Cape Malays are an ethnic group in South Africa, which traces its origin to Muslim, Malay slaves in the time of Dutch colonial rule.

They were followed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC ) is fetched from the Dutch East Indies.

The Cape Malays differ from the Cape Coloureds primarily by their religion, Islam. During apartheid, they were classified as colored and usually speak Afrikaans as their mother tongue. The first text in Afrikaans was written by Cape Malays. Externally, the Cape Malays are more like the Cape Coloureds as Malay or Javanese.

The Cape Malays live predominantly in the Western Cape Province and especially in Cape Town. Their number is expected to be around 200,000.

The Cape Malays have taken especially large influence on the South African cuisine.
