Location

At Cape Palmas, the city is Harper. Often, the entire region Maryland is called Cape Palmas. Directly west of the cape is the estuary of the Hoffman River. Approx. 21 km east lies the border between Liberia and the Ivory Coast, which is formed by the Cavalla River.

On the peninsula stands the Cape Palmas Lighthouse, a former lighthouse, which warned of the numerous shoals in the waters and is now used as a popular lookout. The upstream tiny island Russwurm Iceland is a naked, barely 10 meters at the highest point towering out of the sea cliffs on the south side of Cape Palmas.

History

The first European who got the Cape Palmas to Face, 1458 was the Portuguese explorer Diogo Gomes. He toured the west coast of Africa on behalf of Henry the Navigator. When he came to the point from which branches off the coast to the east, he called this point Cabo das Palmas, which means in English Landscape of the Palms and evolved to its present name. The adjacent river was first called also the Rio Palmas and was later renamed the Hoffman River.
