Cape Pygmy Owl
The Hoskins pygmy owl ( Glaucidium hoskinsii ) is a small owl species of the genus Sperlingskäuze. It is found only in North America.
Appearance
The Hoskins pygmy reaches a height of about 16 centimeters. The head is round. Ear tufts are missing. He is very similar to the Rocky Mountains pygmy, but is slightly smaller and has a shorter tail. The body bottom has somewhat finer stripes. The body top is light reddish brown to pale gray-brown. The Occipitalgesicht formed in all Glaucidium species, is particularly striking when Hoskins pygmy.
There are no mix up in the circulation area, as the Hoskins - pygmy owl is the only pygmy in this region. The Elfenkauz is smaller, has a shorter tail, a body bottom without longitudinal stripes and it also lacks the Occipitalgesicht.
Area of distribution and habitat
The distribution area of the Hoskins - Sperlingskauzes is the south of Baja California. He is a state bird, but occasionally pulls in cold winters in lower altitudes. Its distribution area are pine and oak-pine forests at altitudes 1500-2100 meters above sea level.
Way of life
The Hoskins pygmy owl is a partly diurnal owl species. Its diet consists of insects, small mammals, reptiles, and small birds. About the reproductive biology is not known.
