Capital Department, Tucumán

The Departamento Capital is located in the center of the province of Tucumán in northwestern Argentina, and is one of 17 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the Departamento Tafi Viejo, on the east by the department of Cruz Alta, on the south by the Departamento Lules and to the west by the department of Yerba Buena.

The capital of the department, San Miguel de Tucumán, is also the capital of the province of Tucumán.

Population

According to the last census, the Departamento Capital 527 607 inhabitants had ( INDEC, 2001). According to estimates by the INDEC from the year 2005, the population has risen to 576 700 inhabitants.
