Capital Region (Iceland)

Höfuðborgarsvæðið (Ger. literally, the capital area or the metropolitan area ) is one of the eight regions of Iceland, and also one of the two NUTS - 3 regions.

The metropolitan area is located in southwest Iceland. It essentially comprises the capital Reykjavík and its suburbs. The area around Reykjavík is very densely populated by Icelandic standards and the end of 2008, the area counted a total of 201 585 inhabitants, which represents approximately 60 % of the population of the entire country. Höfuðborgarsvæðið covers an area of 1,042 km ², this results in a population density of about 193.46 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The cooperation association, founded in 1976 (SSH. Isl: Samtök Sveitarfélaga á Höfuðborgarsvæðinu (SSH), English Association of municipalities in the Greater Reykjavík area) is indeed as common organ / body (English: collective body), the following communities; nevertheless, it is merely a loose cooperation for practical reasons. The communities remain independent and distinct.

Therefore, the terms " region " here is somewhat misleading. Höfuðborgarsvæðið is not set by law and the term has primarily a meaning for the statistics. As the English translation of "Capital area" suggests, it is more of an area, a zone with limited cooperation in certain areas. In no case, however, is an administrative region of the type such as one finds it, for example, in Belgium.

According to the Annual General Meeting in November 2011, the Association SSH consists of the following members: Hafnarfjörður, Gardabær, Álftanes, Kópavogur, Reykjavík, Seltjarnarnes, mosfellsbær and Kjósarhreppur.

The municipalities in the capital region have expanded their cooperation more and more in some areas such as waste management, public transport or the fire department in the past time. Since 2007 there is also a joint police for all the churches of the area.

The administrative office ( Skrifstofa ) of the SSH is in Kopavogur.
