Capoeta

Capoeta capoeta capoeta

Capoeta is a genus of small to medium-sized carp fish. Its distribution area covers the western and eastern Transcaucasia, Asia Minor, western Syria and Lebanon. Capoeta species occur, with the exception of the southwest, in all of Iran in the catchment areas of the Jordan, Tigris and Euphrates, and in the basin of the Hari Rud and Murghab in Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. Furthermore, they can also be found in the basin of the Aral Sea.

Features

There are animals with an elongated, rather flachrückigen physique. The under constant foot carries a pair of barbels on the upper jaw, a kind and some sub-populations still wear another pair. The upper lip is very thin, while the lower lip either completely absent or limited to the corners of the mouth. A horn -covered cutting edge sits on the lower jaw. The pharyngeal teeth are arranged in three rows, where in the first row are four to five teeth. The second two to four teeth and the two teeth of the third row are approximately cylindrical. In the Transcaucasian types sit on the gill arches 14 to 33 short Brachiospinen in the other species the gills Reuse from 12 to 33 rakers is formed. Relatively large is the gill opening. The dorsal fin is placed centrally on the back, the tail fin is much indented. The entire body is covered with firmly anchored scales, marked with diverging grooves. Along the straight and complete sidelines sit 37-100 scales, the Transcaucasian types fill in 48 to 80 scales.

System

Currently Capoeta is not assigned to any of the subfamilies of the carp family (Cyprinidae ). The genus has been widely discussed, some authors used the generic name for a subgenus or section of the genus Puntius. At times, some researchers considered Capoeta as a synonym for the African genus Varicorhinus. The only synonym for Capoeta is Scaphiodon. Currently there is no consensus on the number of valid species, as a number of predominantly allopatric species are considered by some authors as a subspecies of Capoeta capoeta.
