Captain General of the Church

The captain - general of the Church (Italian: Chiesa della Capitano generale ) was the de facto commander of the papal forces during the Middle Ages. The item was given as a rule to an Italian nobleman with a professional military reputation, or (later) a relative of the Pope. The parallel position of Gonfaloniere the church was more of a formal and solemn honor, as the responsibility of a tactical military leader. Innocent XII. abolished both offices and replaced them with the office of standard-bearer of the Holy Roman Church (Italian: Chiesa di Santo Vessilifero Romana ), which was later given to the hereditary Patrizi Naro family.

Traditionally wore the captain - general as a symbol of the army command a blessed by the Pope marshal's baton.
