Style

They are known for their " phleng phuea chiwit " ( เพลง เพื่อ ชีวิต ) or " songs for life". This type of music became popular through the protest songs of the 1970s political unrest in Thailand. Carabao have the acoustic folk style of " phuea chiwit " extended to other forms of Thai music, western rock, hard rock, country and musical styles such as Latin and reggae. That is why they are also known as " Ethnic Rocker," " Kings of Cha -Cha -Cha " or " Rolling Stones of Asia."

In the songs of Carabao it comes to social and political issues, demands for social justice and the concerns of ordinary people. But there are also love songs and philosophical songs with messages for all people. Aed Carabao is loved by many. Despite his sharp tongue and his open criticism of politicians, economic and environmental destruction it is successful for a long time. At least one or two songs from the albums of the mid- 90s have been banned by the government. The band was largely ignored by public television and radio stations. Nevertheless, Carabao is the most popular rock band in Thailand. Carabao has reached the cult status long ago and is now one of the most successful legendary rock groups in the world. They are compared with U2.

History

Carabao has a long and checkered history. There were some line-up changes. Several members have left the band and have returned. Band leader, guitarist, lead singer, songwriter and composer Aed is the only member who has participated in all albums and tours.

Carabao in the Philippines was originally founded by Aed, Keo ( khiao ) and one other member, all sang and played guitar. As Aed to Thailand returned there was initially no more common appearances. Aed worked as an architect and by the way still active as a musician. He wrote a song for the live band hammer and played temporarily at the band Hope. Having had experience with other bands, he wanted to have their own band Carabao was revived. He convinced Keo ( khiao ) to come back and play from now on bass.

The first albums

The first album Lung Khi Mao ( ลุง ขี้ เมา - Drunk old man) was released in 1981 by Aed and Keo. They were supported in this by members of Hope, as the young band a drummer, a lead guitarist and a keyboard player were missing. On the album were simple folk songs, which differed only slightly from other " songs for life " bands this time, but there were influences from rock music. Some tunes were taken over by Asian or Thai folk and rock songs. The theme song used the melody of a Filipino folk song. The album was not sold often, but Aed found new members for a compelling live band.

The breakthrough came with the guitarist and singer Preecha Chanapai ( Lek ). Lek had a distinctive and powerful style similar to Santana, which Aed had more faith in the band. At this time played Lek in The President tape. The second album of Carabao Aed, Lek and Keo were supported by members of this band. On this album Keo was playing guitar and bassist Anupong Prathompatama ( Ot ) of the President band played bass. Ot became one of the most loyal members of the band.

With their third album Carabao became known throughout the country. Waniphok ( วณิพก - The wandering musician ) with the same title song tells the story of a blind street musician and was a big hit. This song is characterized by the " Sam Cha " rhythm, a mixture of Northeastern Thai Folk rhythms as Mor Lam and Luk Thung and Latin rhythms. Later Carabao albums are characterized by many of the songs in this style. Aed remarked with pride that discos in Thailand played only western songs before Waniphok, but the catchy, earthy rhythm of the song allowed the breakthrough.

The fourth album played with the drummer Amnaat Luukjan (Pao ), which remained with the band.

Fame

Carabaos most popular album Made In Thailand ( เมด อิน ไทย แลนด์ ) was born in 1984 and was sold to date, over four million copies. The title song was also successful in some neighboring countries. The album is characterized by a remarkable variety of musical styles from Rock, Folk, regional styles such as Thai Mor Lam and Luk Thung, reggae and Latin, as well as classical Thai music with the song เร ฟู จี ( Refugee ).

At this time met two other musicians to Carabao: Thanit Siiklindii ( Ajaan ) with woodwinds and guitarist / singer Thierry Mekwattana. Keo was now backing vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. The current line: Aed, Lek, Thierry, Keo, Ajaan, Ot and Pao is considered by many fans as the classic cast.

With this cast further albums were recorded in the 1980s. It originated powerful, unusually versatile and increasingly political works such as the hits Welcome to Thailand, Khon Chon Phuyingyai, Mae Sai and Thaplang. The latter is about the theft of an ancient door - lintel ( Thai: ทับหลัง - Thaplang ) from the Khmer temple Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung, of the dormant god Vishnu ( Thai: พระ นารายณ์ - Phra Narai ) represents. He appeared later on in an American museum, which led to protests by the Thai government. Through the mediation of the Thai historian Prince Subhadradis Diskul the artwork was returned in 1998. The chorus of the song translates as "Keep your Michael Jackson, but give us back our Vishnu! " During this time Carabao consolidated their reputation as Thailand's most popular musical group of all time.

Resolution

After the album Thaplang of 1988, the band began to unravel, as some members began solo careers. First went Thierry, and Ajaan Pao, who founded an offshoot of the band. After the tenth album Ham Chot Khwai ( ห้าม จอด ควาย ), the band announced their separation. But Aed, Lek and Ot played together again soon with new musicians: Luechai Ngamsom ( Duk ) on keyboards and Chuchat Nuduang ( Ko). Initially, the band had a different name, but Aed was persuaded to revive the name Carabao Carabao again and so was playing with a new cast. Aed was now the only founding member in the band. After the twelfth album Satcha Sip Prakan ( สัจจะ 10 ประการ ) the fans experienced the next shock with the departure of Lek, which by the guitarist Khajornsak Hutawatana (Mi) has been replaced. Although the fans were not happy with the new line-up, three albums emerged in this occupation in the early 90s. Despite the lower commercial success Carabao remained one of the most important Thai bands. The Singles Raeng Koi and Luang Pho Khun were often played by Thai radio stations.

Reunification

In 1995, the band came back together in its classic lineup and celebrated the 15-year -anniversary. They took the double album Hak Huachai Yang Rak Khwai ( หาก หัวใจ ยัง รัก ควาย - If you still love buffalo ) on. This became the biggest success of the band for several years and they were again Thailand's biggest band. But the reunification did not last long. Then again played the occupation Aed -Ot -Duk -Mi - Ko, which was supported in the studio of Keo.

For her 18th album Amerikan Anthaphan is Lek and Thierry joined the band again, involved in the 4 other members of the classic lineup were ( Aed, Lek and Thierry Ot ) and three subsequent members ( Duk Ko, Mi) and as new members of the percussionist / flutist / drummer Thepajon Phanthuphongthai ( Uan ) and the second percussionist / bassist Sayaphon Singthong ( Nong ).

Presence

The band has recorded more albums, which were both commercially successful in the eyes of the critics. The cast remained largely stable. Only Nong left the band recently. Although for years Keo is not an official member, he supported the album with vocals, guitar and production assistant. Pao occasionally takes part in live performances. The last album the band Yisip -Ha Phi Luk Lung Khi Mao (25 years - the child of the drunken old man ) was released in 2007 for their 25th anniversary. To the 80th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej the song Roy Tam Pho appeared on this album (follow the trail of his father ), with which the band pays tribute to the King.
