The Chilean police is divided into the National Police Carabineros de Chile, Policía de Investigaciones the criminal de Chile and regional police forces in Chile.

History

After the military coup in 1973, the Chilean Carabineros de Chile police was placed under the Ministry of Defence. Organization

Carabineros de Chile

The Carabineros comprise around 35,000 men. The main duties include the general enforcement police service in the cities and in the countryside, the control and security of road transport, the fight against drug-related crime and border control.

The Grupo de Operaciones Policiales Especiales ( GOPE ) are the special forces of the police in Chile. The GOPE units are used for dangerous situations police work throughout Chile. The tasks include the localization and defusing of explosive agents, hostage rescue and arrests under difficult conditions.

GOPE was founded on June 7, 1979 by a corresponding federal law, and the tasks for these special forces took from the 1980s.

Policía de Investigaciones de Chile

The police Policía de Investigaciones de Chile Chile is a special police unit, was established in 1933. It is directly under the Ministry of the Interior.

Human Rights

The Chilean student and student protests in Chile 2011-2012, the police took drastic and there have always been allegations against the authorities, civil and human rights were not respected. The demonstrators, including minors, defendant, partly they were beaten by officers or touched inappropriately.
