Caran d'Ache

Life

Emmanuel perry (* 1858 or 1859 in Moscow, † February 26, 1909 in Paris ), better known under the pen Caran d' Ache, was a French caricaturist and humorous illustrator.

Poires grandfather who was drawn with Napoleon's army in 1812 to Russia, remained there. When his nephew Emmanuel perry grew up, he decided after the death of his father in 1877 to emigrate to France and to make military service there. He did this in order to gain the French civil law, which his father and he himself no longer possessed.

In France, he quickly took the pseudonym " Caran d' Ache " on. In the Russian language karan wath [ карандаш ] means nothing other than pencil. It is said to derive from Turkish kara (black) and tash (stone, slate). In phonetically derived French word game to face can be translated with celery.

His first works were published in the journal founded by Albert Robida 1880 La Caricature.

His most famous drawing represents a family is during the Dreyfus Affair (1899 ); she appeared in the daily newspaper Le Figaro. It shows a family for dinner, which degenerates into a wild brawl as soon as someone comes to the topic of " Dreyfus ". The French society at that time was deeply divided, and the anti-Semitism flared up.

In 1898 Caran d'Ache was co-founder, editor and illustrator of " Le P'sst ", a satirical weekly magazine.

" Caran d' Ache " also means the last remaining in the Switzerland manufacturer of pencils, fine arts products and writing instruments as well as drawing, which was founded in Geneva in 1924 by Arnold Schweitzer. He chose the name because he was a great admirer of Poires work.
