Carbamic acid, outdated carbamic acid, is the mono-amide of carbonic acid and - in contrast to diamide urea - as the carbonic acid itself becomes unstable. Carbamic acid decomposes to ammonia and carbon dioxide. Their salts are used as the carbamates, esters frequently referred to as urethanes.

More stable than the acid and its salts are isolable therefore - as the ammonium carbamate - and their esters. A medical premises ester is glaucoma agent carbachol ( Cholincarbamat ). In biology carbamic occurs in phosphorylated form as a carbamoyl, and plays a role in the urea cycle and in the biosynthesis of pyrimidine.

Carbamic acid is a constitutional isomer to nitromethane.
