Carchi Province

Carchi (Spanish: Provincia del Carchi ) is a province in Ecuador, in the 3,700 sq km about 165,000 people live. It was founded on 19 November 1880 and was previously part of the province of Imbabura. Provincial capital is Tulcán.

Location

Carchi is the northernmost province in Ecuador's Andean highlands. It is bordered to the south by Imbabura, on the west by Esmeraldas, Sucumbios and on the east by the north with Colombia. From north to south the Panamerican Highway traverses the province.

Policy

Directly elected Prefect of the province of Carchi is General René Yandun of the Social Democratic party Izquierda Democrática. Even the mayor of Tulcán, Pedro Velasco, has a this party.

The governor appointed by the president called Efren Benavídez.

While not as strong as in Sucumbios, Carchi as suffering but also occasionally the armed conflict in neighboring Colombia, as fighters of guerrilla groups like the FARC increasingly seek refuge across the border and also there are active to some extent.
