Cardinal protodeacon

The cardinal proto- deacon is the reigning senior cardinal deacon (one of the three cardinal classes). Since all cardinals are mutually equal (there is only an honor ranking ), the cardinal proto- deacon is only a primus inter pares among the cardinal deacons. One of his tasks is to tell after a successful election of a pope in the conclave of the benediction loggia from the news of the election of a new Pope to the public with the following words:

" Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam! Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum [ first name ], Sanctae Ecclesiae Romanae Cardinalem [ last name], qui sibi nomen imposuit [ Pope name]. "

"I bring you tidings of great joy: We have a Pope! The most outstanding and most reverend Lord, Mr. [ first name ], the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal [ last name], what is the name of [ Pope Name] has given. "

The cardinal deacon is also where appropriate, to the coronation of the new Pope with the tiara. Selects the new Supreme Pontiff a simpler inauguration ceremony, he or she shall submit to the cardinal deacon at the papal pallium. Furthermore, the cardinal deacon puts in substitution of the Pope the pallium to the metropolitans or passes it to their procurators.

Incumbent is since February 21, 2011 Jean -Louis Tauran, its predecessor can be found on the list of cardinal proto deacons.
