Carey Bell

Carey Bell ( Carey Bell Harrington actually; born November 14, 1936 in Macon, Mississippi; † 6 May, 2007 Chicago, Illinois) was an American blues musician. He played blues harp and was a representative of the Chicago blues.

As a child, Bell admired the music of Louis Jordan. He also wanted to play the saxophone, but that could not afford his family. Therefore, he played the "Mississippi saxophone ", the Blues Harp; playing on the harmonica, he taught himself. His models were DeFord Bailey, Big Walter Horton, Marion " Little Walter " Jacobs and Sonny Boy Williamson I and II of 13 he played in the band of his godfather Lovie Lee.

In 1956 Bell with Lee to Chicago. Here Bell learned of Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II and Big Walter Horton. With the rising popularity of the electric guitar but lost the Blues Harp attractive and Bell learned to play Hound Dog Taylor electric bass. He occasionally plays bass with Robert Nighthawk, Johnny Young and Big Walter, however, continued to play blues harp in the bands of Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon.

In 1972, the album Big Walter Horton with Carey Bell, a year later Bells first solo album. Bell continued to play at Dixon, whose album Living Chicago Blues ( 1978) was nominated for a Grammy.

In the 1980s, Bell was mainly to listen live, often in a duo with Louisiana Red 1990 he took with Junior Wells, James Cotton and Billy Branch Album Harp Attack! on, which was a best-seller for the record label Alligator. The solo album Deep Down (1995 ) gave Bell outside the blues scene attention. As the best harmonica player, he received this year also the Living Blues Award. In Germany, Bell was active. So he took in 1994 with the Berlin Blues Band East Blues Experience an album titled "Good Unterstandig " on.

Carey Bell was until shortly before his death on tour and brought out albums, often accompanied by his son Lurrie Bell, a blues guitarist.

He died in 2007 in a Chicago hospital from heart failure.
