Carignan Blanc

Carignan Blanc is a white grape variety. It is a mutation of the vine Carignan Gris. It was discovered in 1900 by Combettes and Despetits and first described. The variety is very susceptible to powdery mildew and against the raw rot.

Carignan Blanc is grown mainly in the French department Hérault, Pyrénées- Orientales, Aude and Gard. While in 1958 nor in 2316 hectares under vine were collected, the inventory in 1998 was 1089 hectares and 460 hectares in 2007. She may be allowed in the appellation Faugères, but is processed in the main to simple table wines. It is obtained sour, very neutral white wines, which are used almost exclusively for blending with other varieties.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy and white wool edged reddish. The yellowish young leaves are also white wool coated and are quickly thin and shiny.
  • The very large leaves are five-lobed and strongly sinuate ( see also the article sheet form). The petiole is open U-shaped. The sheet is cut sharply. The teeth are large in comparison with the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called leaf blade ) is rough blistered.
  • The cone - shaped to cylindrical cluster is large, shouldered or branched and dichtbeerig. The roundish berries are medium in size and yellowish in color. The vines are thick- and the must weight usually high.

Carignan aged almost 30 days after the Chasselas. It is thus considered late maturing. The late bud break saved him from late frost hazard. The powerfully built strain grew provides steady returns.

It is highly susceptible to powdery mildew and downy mildew and against the tendency due to the Dichtbeerigkeit to raw rot. Carignan Blanc is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.
