Carl Andreas Duker

Karl Andreas Duker (also: culvert; * 1670 in Unna, † November 5, 1752 in Meiderich ) was a German philologist, historian and rhetorician.

Life

The youngest son of the lawyer and Unnaer Mayor John Duker and his wife Katharina Elisabeth Roell grew up with two older brothers and a sister. After visiting the Athenaeum in Hamm 1690 he went to Franeker, where his initial training his uncle Hermann Alexander Roell initiated. In 1691, he enrolled at the University of Harderwijk and became a student of Anthony Schultingh. This he followed in 1694 at the University of Franeker, where Jacobus Perizonius took another influence on his studies. He was reportedly then received his doctorate of rights, but can not prove this Promotion in the Dutch promotional albums.

In 1700, he became a teacher of history and rhetoric at Pädagogium Herborn, joined in 1704 as vice principal at the high school in The Hague and was appointed by the curators of the University of Utrecht on April 22, 1716 to Professor of History and Rhetoric at the local academy. This office he took up with a Latin speech about the difficulties of grammatical interpretation of the Greek and Roman authors on 28 May 1716. In Utrecht he also participated in the organizational tasks of the Academy and was 1723/24 Rector of the Alma Mater. On November 15, 1734 he laid down for health reasons, the professorship. After that, he lived in IJsselstein and Vianen, where he continued his studies. Two months before he died, he moved to his niece.
