Carl Joseph Meade ( born November 16, 1950 in Chanute Air Force Base, State of Illinois, USA ) is a former American astronaut.

Meade received in 1973 a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975 and a master's in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.

Meade worked as an electrical engineer at Hughes Aircraft. He then joined the United States Air Force, where he was trained as pilots and test pilots and also used as such at Edwards Air Force Base. In 1985, he was transferred back as an instructor at the USAF Test Pilot School.

Astronauts activity

In June 1985, Meade was selected after an unsuccessful bid for the tenth astronaut group by NASA as an astronaut candidate by NASA the eleventh group.

STS -38

Meade launched on 15 November 1990 as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Atlantis on his first mission into space. On behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense has been exposed as the payload of a military spy satellite.

STS -50
