Carl Johan Malmsten

Carl Johan Malmstén ( born April 9, 1814 Uddetorp, Sweden, † February 11, 1886 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish mathematician.

He became a lecturer in 1840 and in 1842 full professor of mathematics at Uppsala University, where he served 1855/56 as rector. In 1859 he was appointed State Council and from 1866 to 1879 he was Landshövding ( governor ) of the province of Skaraborg County. From 1867 to 1870 he also was one of the first chamber of the Riksdag.

As a university teacher he exercised a great and lasting influence. He was the first who made known in Sweden, the Cauchy function theory. He has published on various subjects of analysis; the most important is the study of the remainder term of Euler's summation formula. He has also made ​​great contributions to the development of the Swedish life insurance companies. He co-founded the Acta Mathematica.

He was a member of many academies and learned societies; among other correspondent since 1875 ( since 1882 a foreign member ) of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and the December 15, 1880 an honorary member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences.

His daughter was married to Ernst Christian Julius Schering.
