Carl Larsson

Carl Larsson ( born May 28, 1853 in Stockholm, † January 22, 1919 in Falun ) was a Swedish artist.

His paintings, watercolors and drawings mainly the lives of his family (together with Karin Larsson had eight children) in and around the house in Sundborn, Sweden. Carl and Karin are considered the founders of today regarded as typically Swedish interior design style, the essential elements are brightness, color and lively and cheerful functionality. The house is now a museum. In Germany Larsson became famous in 1909 by the book " The House in the Sun".

Life

Carl Larsson grew up in a poor family. When he was 13 years old, his teacher encouraged him to study at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm. For the payment of the studies, he was forced to work part time. He was, for example, worked as a retoucher for a photographer. After a royal medal, he was assigned in 1876, it was financially a bit better.

In 1877, Larsson was able to take his first trip to Paris. His third trip to France led in 1882 in the artists colony Grez -sur -Loing near Fontainebleau, where he produced many watercolors of the surrounding nature. Here he also met Karin Bergöö know that his wife was soon. The couple returned then back to Sweden for the wedding. " This was a turning point in Larsson's life. In Grez, Larsson painted some of his most important works, but now in watercolor and very different from the oil color technique he used previously, "it says in the book edited by Michael Snodin and Elisabeth Stavenow - Hidemark book" Carl and Karin Larsson - your life and her art ... Between 1885 and 1888 he painted mainly views of Stockholm. Carl Larsson joined the group of artists Opponenterna, the reform to the education demanded at the Art Academy. These demands were rejected, however. 1886 Larsson was also head of an art school in Gothenburg.

1888 got the family a small house near Sundborn gift from the in-laws. The house was gradually expanded and artistic craftsmanship of Carl and Karin, embellished and expanded and was named " Lilla Hyttnäs " (such as: small hut ) is known. The house became the artistic center, the seven children ( an eighth died shortly after birth) were raised here and immortalized together with the village community, on numerous typical for Larsson oil paintings and watercolors. The house is preserved to this day faithfully as a family museum and still serves as a meeting place for the family.

After another stay in Paris, where among other things the triptych Rococo Renässans - Nutida Const arose, he was commissioned by the National Museum in Stockholm with the design of the interior walls of this building. From 1896 he painted six walls al fresco, where among other things, the pictures were taken Gustav Vasa's entry into Stockholm on Midsummer Eve 1523 landfall of Gustav Adolf in Germany.

Other works by Carl Larsson located in Stockholm at the Royal Opera and the Royal Dramatic Theatre ( Dramaten ) and in Gothenburg in Hvitfeldtska school. Another picture ( midvinterblot ) was rejected during his lifetime Larsson; greatly annoyed he presented the work done anyway. Only in 1997 it came after many detours to its intended Larsson place in the National Museum.

Home and family were famous in the album " Ett Hem " ( A Home ) by 1899. The collection " The House in the Sun" from 1909 increased the awareness in Germany. Among these was also " Jag " ( I ), the completed shortly before his death memoirs, however, were not published until 1931.

During his lifetime Larsson there were some very successful exhibitions and Competition Entries in Germany, including Berlin and Munich. The largest exhibition in Germany took place at the turn of 2005/2006 in the Kunsthalle of the Hypo Cultural Foundation in Munich.
