Carl von Marr

Carl von Marr ( born February 14, 1858 in Milwaukee, † July 10, 1936 in Munich ) was an American- German painter and Munich professor and rector.

Life

Carl von Marr, son of the German immigrant and engraver John Marr, first studied in Milwaukee at Henry Vianden and then went to Germany, where he worked in Weimar students at Martin Schauss, in Berlin with Karl Gussow and in Munich under Wilhelm von Lindenschmit and Otto Seitz student was. In 1893 he became professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, 1895 member of the Berlin Academy of Mahler, sculptor and Architectur Art and 1919-1924 Rector of the Munich Academy of Art.

Since 1916, he was with Elsie Messerschmitt born Fellerer of the history painter Pius Ferdinand Messerschmitt widow married.

Marr painted numerous images that include figures, genre and religious scenes; some of them were awarded gold medals. His works have been presented at numerous exhibitions in Germany and America.

The Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend has several works Marrs, including the monumental painting " The Flagellants ".

Carl von Marr is buried in the cemetery in Munich Solln in the same grave as Pius Ferdinand Messerschmitt. In Munich - Solln, where he lived several times, the Karl- Marr Street was named after him in 1947.
