Carlo Agostino Badia

Carlo Agostino Badia (* 1672 probably in Verona, † September 23, 1738 in Vienna) was an Italian composer of the late Baroque.

Life

About Badias youth and education, nothing is documented, he was first mentioned as about 20 years old, thanks to the composition of his operas and oratorios of his time in Innsbruck beginning of the 1690s, where he was in the service of the Duchess Eleonora Maria. In 1693 he followed the Duchess to Vienna. In Vienna Badia 1694 was hired as Compositeur of Emperor Leopold I, and the Emperor sent him to Rome for further training. From 1697 Badia was probably back in Vienna, where at that time compositions have been performed by him. In October 1700, he married the soprano Anna Maria Lisi, who was also employed at the Viennese court. It was long assumed that Badia was Venetians, however, from the entry in the church book at his first marriage shows that he was a native of " Warona in Welschland " which Verona is meant.

After the death of Leopold I, the couple was able to keep his positions even under Joseph I.. The most significant works Badias emerged in the period between 1700 bis 1710. Apart from the operas, numerous oratorios and cantatas, which are often composed for the Ursuline convent in Vienna, where they were often performed in the presence of the Emperor. After the death of Emperor Joseph Badia kept his job and composed but very little, his works show after 1710 very little innovation, hence preferred Emperor Charles VI. the contemporary taste according to the works of Antonio Caldara.

Work

Carlo Agostino Badia was, as Giovanni Battista Bononcini instrumental in the introduction of the late Baroque style of music in Vienna. About 35 oratorios and cantatas, and some 35 arias for two sopranos and Cemabalo can be attributed Badia.
