Carlo Ambrogio Lonati

Carlo Ambrogio Lonati (also called Lunati; * 1645 in Milan, † probably 1710-1715 ) was an Italian composer, violinist and singer.

Life

Lonati was from 1665 to 1667 worked as a violinist at the court of the viceroy of Naples, where he also took opera roles. After that, he worked in Rome for ten years as a concert master and singer at the court of Christina of Sweden. Here he met Alessandro Stradella and Lelio Colista; with the former, he worked in later years in Genoa. In Rome he composed many violin and trio sonatas, which were the works of Arcangelo Corelli and Henry Purcell as a model. He counted as Corelli to the masters of the young Francesco Geminiani. Francesco Maria Veracini described him in 1760 as one of the most virtuoso violinist of his century.

Works

The only handwritten traditional instrumental works are some trio sonatas and the 1701 Emperor Leopold I devoted 12 Sonata for violin and basso continuo, to include a more comprehensive Ciacona 600 cycles. Six of these works are listed in Scordatura. This sonata collection came about Johann Georg Pisendel to Dresden, where the originals have been lost since 1945. Lonati let his works deliberately not print, so that they, as quoted him Veracini literally, did not fall into the hands of people who can not even read the clock.
