Carlo Cercignani

Carlo Cercignani ( born June 17, 1939 in Teulada, Cagliari, † January 7, 2010 in Milan ) was an Italian mathematician and physicist.

Life

Cercignani studied at the University of Milan with the Laurea degree in physics in 1961 and in mathematics in 1963. He was professor of mechanics and aerodynamics at the Politecnico in Milan and member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and the French Académie des Sciences. He was a specialist of the Boltzmann equation, which he treated in many of his books.

In 1998 he received the Medaglia della cultura e dell'arte ai benemeriti. 1984 to 1987 he was Chairman of the Mathematics Committee of the National Research Council CNR.
