Carlo Odescalchi

Carlo Odescalchi, SJ ( born March 5, 1785 Rome, † August 17, 1841 in Modena ) was an Italian cardinal and cardinal vicar.

Life

Odescalchi, the. Among others, the former Pope Innocent XI was related, fled with his family because of the French occupation in Hungary. From 1798 he studied at the local Roman seminar. 1809, when he was back in Rome, he was able to acquire a doctorate in civil and canon law. On December 31, 1808, he had already received the priesthood. Pope Pius VII appointed him in 1809 to his home prelates, 1815, he sent him as legate to Olomouc. Four years later, the newly appointed Cardinal Odescalchi brought Rudolf Johannes Joseph Rainer von Habsburg-Lothringen, the red biretta.

On March 10, 1823 Pius VII, took the 38-year Odescalchi itself into the College of Cardinals to give him the titular church of Santi Apostoli XII was assigned. Just two months later, he donated Cardinal Dean Giulio Maria della Somaglia episcopal ordination. This Odescalchi was officially Archbishop of Ferrara. He also took part in the conclave 1823. For the new Pope Leo XII. organized Cardinal Odescalchi and the preparations for the Holy Year of 1825. In February 1828, he was Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. He then participated in the conclaves of 1829 and 1830 to 1831.

Pope Gregory XVI. took him in 1833 in the series of cardinal bishops, and showed him the bishopric of Sabina suburbicarian to. A year later, on November 21, 1834, he appointed him to the Cardinal Vicar. In 1837 he assisted in this function, the Roman population in curbing the cholera epidemic. In February 1838 he became Grand Prior of the Order of Malta. Just nine months later Odescalchi returned all the offices and honors and entered the Jesuit order in 1840. Finally, the former Cardinal exercised missionary activities in northern Italy. There he died in 1841, at just 56 years. Under Pope Pius XI. opened the beatification process for Carlo Odescalchi in March 1927.
