Carlo Ruini

Carlo Ruini (* 1530 in Bologna, † 1598 ) was the author of one of the most important veterinary medical works of the 16th century, in 1598, three months after his death, first published in Anatomia del Cavallo (anatomy of the horse ).

Ruini was a senator of Bologna and the scion of a prominent family in the city. He attended neither the prestigious University of Bologna, yet he received a medical or anatomical training; whether he enjoyed an artistic training is unknown.

The plant is considered a milestone in veterinary anatomy and in particular the Pferdeheilkunde, which was heavily influenced by the works of Andreas Vesalius and was exceeded only in the second half of the 18th century. However, the direct impact on contemporary veterinary practice was low, the effect on the literature was limited to long often poor quality imitations and copies, only by numerous translations and reprints until the 18th century, the plant was able to prevail slowly.
