Carlos Álvarez (politician)

Carlos " Chacho " Álvarez (born 26 December 1948 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine politician and co-founder of the center- left party Frente País Solidario ( Frepaso ).

Álvarez studied at the Universidad de Buenos Aires ( UBA) history. Together with Fernando de la Rúa, he won the 1999 Argentine presidential election, and from 1999 until October 2000 Vice President under De la Rua. The victory over the Peronists its candidate Eduardo Duhalde was due to the formation of the Alianza, a coalition of Radical (UCR, De la Rúa ) and Frepaso ( Álvarez ), succeeded. After a corruption scandal in the Senate Álvarez resigned in protest against the line of the President in October 2000. After the socio-economic collapse and the failure of the de la Rúa government in December 2001 ( Argentina crisis) the Frepaso lost all political significance. Most of their supporters are now found in the camp of President Néstor Kirchner again.

Álvarez is since 1 September 2011, Secretary General of the Latin American Integration Association ( LAIA ).
