Carlos Calvo (historian)

Carlos Calvo ( born February 26, 1824 in Buenos Aires, † May 2, 1906 in Paris), sometimes also called Charles Calvo, was an Argentine journalist and historian, who was particularly active in the field of international law. According to him, the so-called Calvo Doctrine is named, has a principle of international law, the impact on the relations between states and individuals of foreign origin.

Life

Carlos Calvo was born in 1824 in Buenos Aires, but spent most of his life abroad and from 1860 was in the diplomatic service works. In the same year he was commissioned by the Government of Paraguay to London and Paris. In the following years he published in Paris a multi-volume work on the theory and practice of international law, which as one of the most important sources was considered at that time to international law. His other publications listed historical books on the history of South America.

In September 1873 he was involved in the Belgian city of Ghent to the founding of the Institut de Droit international ( Institute of International Law ), a 1904 Nobel Peace Prize winning and existing up to the present institution whose goal is the development of international law. 1885, worked at the time as an envoy of Argentina in Berlin, he published a dictionary of international law. According to him, the so-called Calvo Doctrine is named, according to which in private law disputes by foreign nationals or companies law of the host country is responsible locally and therefore has to be avoided diplomatic intervention of the home State.

Carlos Calvo was a member of a foreign member of the Paris Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of the Institut de France. He died in Paris in 1906.
