Carlos Chagas

Carlos Justiniano Ribeiro ( born 9 July 1879 in Oliveira, † November 8, 1934 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian physician das Chagas.

Chagas described the first time in 1909, named after him Chagas disease in track workers who suffered apparently from malaria. He named the causative agent of Chagas disease after his mentor Oswaldo Cruz cruzi as Trypanosoma. Chagas was elected in 1926 a member of the Leopoldina.

Carlos Chagas Filho, his son (1910-2000) was also a physician and biophysicist.
