Carlos Fariñas

Carlos Fariñas Cantero ( born November 28, 1934 in Cienfuegos, † 2002 in Havana ) was a Cuban composer.

Fariñas was a student of Harold Gramatges, Serafín Pró, Edgardo Martín, Argeliers León, Enrique González and José Mántici Ardèvol. In 1956 he studied at Tanglewood with Aaron Copland, 1961-1963 at the Moscow Conservatory with Alexander Ivanovich Pirumow and Dmitri Kabalevsky.

Since the 1960s, he turned to electronic music. In 1972, he co-wrote with Sergio Barroso Diálogos for tape. 1975 was commissioned by the Cuban National Ballet, the composition Yagruma for orchestra, eleven drummer and electro-acoustic instruments. This was followed by further works for tape, multimedia compositions, and finally also pieces for computer generated electro-acoustic music, but in addition also a cello and a guitar concert.

Since 1963 taught composition at the Conservatorio Alejandro García Fariñas Caturla. From 1967 to 1977 he headed the music department of the Biblioteca Nacional and organized in this property courses, conferences and concerts in which he made ​​known the works of Xenakis, Nono, Cage, Ferrari, Maderna and Stockhausen in Cuba. In 1978 he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Music of the Instituto Superior de Arte. In 1989 he was among the founders of the Estudio de Música Electrónica y por Computación.
