Carlos Girón

Carlos Armando Gutiérrez Girón ( born November 3, 1954 in Mexicali ) is a former Mexican diver, who competed in four Olympic Games and won a silver medal, 1975, he triumphed at the Pan American Games on home soil.

Carlos Giron debuted at the 1972 Olympics, he finished ninth in the art jumping and eighth from the tower. At the Pan American Games in 1975 in Mexico City Girón jumped off the three- meter board to third place behind the Americans Tim Moore and Phil Boggs, from the ten-meter tower won Girón before Tim Moore and Kent Vosler, both USA, and thus won his most important titles. The following year, at the 1976 Olympic Games Girón reached the seventh place from the board and again in eighth place from the tower.

At the Pan American Games in 1979 in San Juan the American Greg Louganis dominated the water jump. He won both contests by a wide margin; from the board Girón won bronze behind Phil Boggs, the tower Girón received silver after he had a point ahead of Boggs at the end. At the Olympic Games in 1980, Louganis and Boggs were missing because of the Olympic boycott. The finals of the three- meter board Girón went as the leader, but was only 0.92 points ahead of the Soviet Springer Alexander Portnow. In the final of largely unknown Portnow ultimately had the better nerves and went on to win gold at almost thirteen points ahead of Girón, which in turn had over twenty points ahead of Franco Cagnotto. The finale of the tower reached three jumpers from the Soviet Union and the GDR, the Austrian Niki Stajkovic and Carlos Girón represented the rest of the world. While Stajkovic finished eighth and last place in the final, to the Bay of Pigs was able to improve for a place from fifth place in the preliminaries, but had seven points behind the bronze medal.

Four years later, at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles is no longer qualified eight but twelve Springer for the final. Carlos Girón reached in springboard diving again the finals, finishing in twelfth place.
