Carlos María de la Torre

Carlos María Cardinal Javier Nieto de la Torre ( born November 14, 1873 in Quito, Ecuador; † July 31, 1968 ibid ) was Archbishop of Quito.

Life

Carlos María de la Torre studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary in Quito and at the Pontifical Latin American Group " Pius " in Rome. In 1896 he received his doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University in philosophy and in theology, canon law in 1906.

He received on 19 December 1896, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked until 1911 as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Quito ( in Machachi and Pelileo ) and lecturer at the local seminary. In addition, he held various responsibilities in the administration of the Archdiocese.

1911 he was appointed by Pope Pius X. Bishop of Loja; He received his episcopal consecration on May 26, 1912, the archbishop of Quito, Federico González Suárez. 1919 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XV. Bishop of Riobamba. Pope Pius XI. conferred on him in 1926 the leadership of the diocese of Guayaquil and named him in 1933 Archbishop of Quito.

Pope Pius XII. took Carlos María de la Torre in 1953 as Cardinal Priest of the pro hac vice levied for the titular church of Santa Maria in Aquiro title diakonia in the College of Cardinals to. He was the first cardinal from Ecuador. On several occasions he represented the Pope as the papal legate. After the Pope's death, he took part in the conclave in 1958. He participated in the first session of the Second Vatican Council. At the conclave of 1963, almost 90 -year-old Cardinal took no further part for health reasons. Carlos María de la Torre resigned from the leadership of the Archdiocese of Quito in 1967 and died a year later on 31 July in the capital of Ecuador, where he was buried in the cathedral.
