Carlungie and Ardestie earthhouses

Carlungie basement or Earth House is located about four kilometers northeast of Monifieth and 0.75 km from Monifie in the Scottish county of Angus. It is located just 1.7 km from the basement of Ardestie away. The fact that basements are called Earth Houses in Scotland, has the reason that they are complex, once underground structures from the Iron Age.

The wall structure of orthostat and dry masonry is clearly visible, all the capstones of the system, however, are lacking. Carlungie is 45.5 m long, was discovered in 1949 during plowing and excavated in 1950-51 by " Historic Scotland ". Carlungie is much more complex than other investments in Angus and has a number of tortuous passages that were associated with above-ground areas. But his side walls do not form the basement for Scottish usual, banana-shaped curved structure. It was provided with paved areas on the ground, do not show the other basement and seems like many plants of this kind in antiquity, after it had gone out of use, to have been backfilled with soil.

In the British Isles, the Iron Age basement also Earth Houses, Fogous or Weems are called. The common expression in Scotland also Weem comes from the Gaelic Uaimh and means cave.
