Carpet plot

The carpet diagram ( eng. carpet plot) is a form of representation that makes it possible to visualize two functions with two independent variables in a two-dimensional representation. In addition to the horizontal X and vertical Y- axis, two additional axes exist with the two independent variables that are curved in the drawing area. It can be read here up to four values simultaneously and intermediate values can be easily interpolated. Despite the purely two-dimensional representation form addition, gives the impression of a three dimensional surface.

Carpet diagrams will often find in aviation or in the turbine design use, as various parameters that influence each other, need to be weighed against each other here. A clear visualization can support this, to make the right decisions the designer.

Another visualization that is referred to in the literature as carpet diagram (English Carpet plot), is the grid graph

Variants

Cheater plots

With the so-called cheater plots a function of two variables in the form of a two-dimensional diagram carpet can be visualized. This has in certain cases a better readability in contrast to the three-dimensional display format. Since no values for the X -axis in this case, these will be calculated by a formula. This can be varied as desired for readability. The X axis is generally not labeled in cheater plots.

Carpet diagram with contour lines

To add even more information to accommodate the carpet diagram, it is also possible to insert a contour plot. The contour lines here are a function of two independent variables. This can be realized both in a carpet diagram with four variables and a Cheater plot.

Trellis diagram

To a third axis can be visualized in addition to the X-axis or the Y-axis, additional carpet charts can be drawn for discrete values. By connecting the individual points of intersection in this case results in a so-called Gitterdiagram. This can be applied both on carpet diagrams as well as plots cheaters. However, in several Cheater plots the individual carpet diagrams need to be shifted in the X axis.
