Fruits of Japanese Hornbeam

The Japanese Hornbeam (Carpinus japonica ) is a plant that belongs to the genus of hornbeam (Carpinus ) from the birch family ( Betulaceae ). It is native to Japan where it is known as Kumashide (Japanese熊 四 手). The tree is very rare to find in Central Europe in collections and large gardens.

Description

The Japanese Hornbeam grows as a tree and reaches stature heights of up to 10 meters. The smooth bark has a gray - purple or dark green color with wavy pink stripes. The bark of the branches is red and hairy. The 5 to 10 cm long, eilanzettlichen leaves are sharply cut with forward-facing teeth. Each sheet has 20 to 22 pairs of parallel nerves.

The inflorescence consists of a 5 × 3 cm large egg-shaped bundle inwardly curved bracts ( bracts ) that are initially pale green and carmine dye in August. The fruits are nutlets.

The first description by the German -Dutch botanist Carl Ludwig Blume was published in 1851.
