History

Finds evidence of a settlement of the current municipal area since the Neolithic period. Not much is known about the origins of the modern village. The earliest traces of today's settlement date from the Middle Ages. Probably the present town developed in the course of settlement policy after the Portuguese Reconquista. The parish church dates from the 16th century, since then there Carreira as an independent municipality.

Culture and sights

The parish church Igreja de Paroquial Carreira, after their patron saint of St Sebastian also Igreja de São Sebastião, is a listed building. Other monuments in the church are a medieval Wegpflasterung, and a not yet fully excavated and classified discovery of a Neolithic settlement, the Povoado do Veloso.

Community

The community has a health center, a branch office of the health center of Portalegre, an institution in the national network to the Portuguese public health system Serviço Nacional de Saúde.

The 120 -member sports club Associação da Juventude Carreirens (English about: Association of Youth Carreira ) operates football, futsal, paintball, mountain biking, archery, camping, events of the exchange, and he participates in the organization of village festivals.
