Cary Odell

Cary Odell ( born September 20, 1910 in Indiana; † January 19, 1988 in San Luis Obispo, California ) was an American production designer in film.

Life

Cary Odell worked since 1935, first as Setzeichner for Columbia Pictures. For the lush scenes from Frank Capra's Fantasy Film In of Shangri - La ( Lost Horizon, 1937), he got the inspiration for his drawings from the style of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1939 he was allowed for Capra's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington ( Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) shape as an assistant the scene image. Three years later he came to Columbia for the first time as an art director for use.

Over the years he has been nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction, so for Charles Vidor's Technicolor film musical Cover Girl ( Cover Girl, 1944), Richard Quine's Bell Book and Candle ( Bell, Book and Candle, 1958) and John Frankenheimer's Seven Days in May (Seven days in May, 1964). However, he always went home empty-handed. From 1955 he also worked for the U.S. television, in 1974 before he retired from show business. He died in 1988 at the age of 77 years in San Luis Obispo, California.
