Caspar Bartholin the Younger

Caspar Bartholin Thomeson ( Caspar Bartholin Secundus or Caspar Bartholin the Younger, born September 10, 1655 in Copenhagen, † June 11, 1738 ) was a Danish anatomist. Life

He was the son of the anatomist and scientist Thomas Bartholin and grandson of the same anatomist Caspar Bartholin and theologians. The latter is sometimes incorrectly attributed the discovery of the gland.

Caspar Bartholin began his medical studies in 1671 and has been in 1674, when 19 -year-old, appointed by King Christian IV as professor of philosophy. After his appointment, he undertook a three-year study trip to Europe, where he worked among others with the Parisian anatomist Joseph Guichard Duverney ( 1648-1730 ). With this together, he found the Bartholin's gland in a cow. After his return to Copenhagen, he taught as a professor of physics and anatomy at the University of Copenhagen, where he served three times as rector. In 1678 he received from his father the title of Doctor of Medicine.

In his later life Caspar Bartholin began to take an interest in politics. In 1709 he became a judge at the Supreme Court, in 1719 the Attorney General and 1724 Ministerial of Finance.
