Caspar U.1

The Caspar U. 1 was a seaplane Caspar -Werke AG, which had been constructed by Ernst Heinkel in the 1920s. In addition to the SI Caspar the U. 1 one of the first drafts of 1922 in Travemünde was reopened Caspar works.

History

According to requirements of the United States Navy Ernst Heinkel constructed a small biplane, which should be kept on board submarines. For this purpose it was necessary that the aircraft could be quickly assembled or disassembled. The decomposed plane had to fit into a 7.40 m long cylindrical container with a diameter of 1.70 m. According to other sources, the dimensions were only 6 m and 1.5 m. The short assembly time has been reached by the execution as a cantilever ( strive and strain- loose ) biplane. It was reported that four technicians required one minute and three seconds for the assembly. According to this were 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

Two U. 1 1922 were delivered to the U.S. Navy, a third specimen (D 293) probably got the Reichswehr, added two more delivered to Japan U. 2, which only slightly differed from the U. 1 came.

Construction

The aircraft was built largely of wood. Upper and lower wings had wooden spars and ribs with Sperrholzbeplankung. The two -step wooden floats were attached with longitudinally with wire braced tubular steel struts to the hull. The cockpit was located immediately behind the upper wing. An armament was not provided.
