Castanopsis wallichii

Castanopsis wallichii is an endemic tree species in Southeast Asia from the beech family ( Fagaceae ).

Features

Castanopsis wallichii is a tree.

The fruit cup ( cupulae ) are occupied with branched spines. The spikes covering the entire surface of the fruit cup. They are very sparrig and have three to seven branches. A cupule contains one to four nuts, which are oval or flattened.

Bloom time is from January to November, usually July to September. Fruit ripening occurs from January to August, usually in January.

Dissemination and locations

The species occurs in Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. It grows in tropical evergreen forests, often along river banks in 10 to 100 m above sea level.
