Casteldaccia

Casteldaccia is a city in the province of Palermo in the Italian region Sicily, with 11,039 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Casteldaccia located 23 km southeast of Palermo on the coast of the Mediterranean. The inhabitants work mainly in industry and agriculture ( wine, citrus fruits).

With the new motorway Casteldaccia the place has a connection to the motorway A19/E90. The village lies on the railway line Messina -Palermo.

The neighboring municipalities are Altavilla Milicia, Baucina, Bolognetta, Caccamo, Misilmeri, Santa Flavia, Trabia and Ventimiglia di Sicilia.

History

Casteldaccia has the status of an independent municipality since 1854, but the existence of Casalia is likely since the Islamic and Norman times, especially on the border with neighboring community Altavilla Milicia S. Maria di Campogrosso already for the Norman period is documentary detectable. Single Archaeological finds from the Contrada Ciandro could not be studied scientifically in their fund context. The toponym indicates that the Cantor of the Capella Palatina owned land here.

Economy

In Casteldaccia there is a wine cellar and a pastificio and a oleoficio of regional importance. Founder of the winery was the Duke Edoardo di Salaparuta 1824. Nowadays Vini Corvo is jointly owned with the Marsalaproduzenten Florio to ILLVA Saronno Holding, which invests according to own data in a five-year plan around € 30 million in modernization and expansion of production facilities and the purchase of growing areas.

In summer, numerous Palermo for a rental in the community, thereby doubling the number of its inhabitants almost. This was similar already in 1900, of which a number of Art Nouveau villas ( Liberty ) attest.

Local specialties heard in many places in Sicily, also Buccellato. Since 2002 takes place in the castle an annual Sagra del buccellato instead.
