Castelfranco Emilia

Castelfranco Emilia is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 32 043 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Modena in the Emilia -Romagna. The city is situated about twelve kilometers south of Modena and about 25 km northwest of Bologna. The municipality borders the province of Bologna, to which it belonged until 1929. Since 2006 the community has city rights by presidential decree.

History

Near the town is the so-called Forum Gallorum. Here at the former Via Aemilia defeated Octavian and Aulus Hirtius 43 BC Marcus Antonius. Its origins are to be found at the end of the 12th century. The place is mentioned several times in 1225. The church of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the years 1226-1232. Between 1628 and 1634, the fortress was built to serve as the northern bastion of the Papal States by Pope Urban VIII.

In the city the tortellini to have been invented.

Traffic

Castelfranco Emilia is located on the State Road 9, which runs from Bologna to Modena. Just south of that is the Autostrada A1. The railway route from Modena to Bologna through the town.
