Girnigoe and Sinclair Castle ( 2000)

Girnigoe and Sinclair Castle are two castle ruins about five kilometers north of Wick in the Scottish Highlands.

Location

The ruins are a ten miles south of John o 'Groats and one mile east of Ackergill Castle directly on the cliffs. For them, it is ultimately two castles that were built on a huge rock right on the Sinclair 's Bay.

History

The first Castle Girnigoe, originated in the 15th century, was mainly a tower house (tower house). Until the 17th century, various extensions developed around this tower house in the form of " Courtyards " which were later called Sinclair Castle.

Girnigoe Castle has been one of the many castles that was entertained by the old " Lordly line of St. Clair " ( Sinclair) - strictly speaking of the " Sinclair Earls of Caithness ."

1690 George Sinclair of Keiss besieged the two castles and could destroy them by means of heavy guns, and thus gain the victory over the defenders. He destroyed his own legacy, as the castles stood by him. After the re- use of these drugs, he gave up any claim to the ruined castles, leaving the now abandoned ruins in the state in which they are to be seen today.

Plant

In earlier times, the access to the castles in just over a fragile wooden bridge was possible that led to the rocks.

This very rugged construction fragments consisting of slate -like, now very weathered rock, are only partially accessible, but hide several secret passages in caves and in the interior of the rock. One of these programs performs in the rocks at sea - water level and may have served the then resident nobility as a way to escape to the open sea in the defense case.
