Castle Wagrain

The castle is located in Wagrain World Premiere Austria, about one kilometer east of the town center.

History

The castle is first mentioned in 1135 in a document. From 1447 Wagrain castle is owned by the family Engl 1499, ownership is raised to a Hofmark ( nobleman 's seat) by Maximilian I and the existing building replaced by a new building. The castle remained, except in 1620 by a religion -related interruption until the 20th century belonged to the family Engl Engl 1717 the family is elevated to the rank of count. Died in 1910 with Count Siegmund Engl from the last rung in the male line of the family Engl. His daughter married the Earl of mirror field. In 1950 the family sold the mirror box Wagrain castle to the city Vöcklabruck. Since then the castle for educational and cultural purposes will be used. The Bundesrealgymnasium Vöcklabruck has been housed since 1993 in it.

Nature

The present castle consists of two of the original four round towers, the main part and the two wings. Two of the round towers were demolished in the early 18th century as part of an extension. The gate tower is completely gone. In 1980, the former farm buildings were east of the castle demolished to make way for the HTL workshop. The "U" of the original castle was closed by an additional building in 2000, thus creating a courtyard. The annex is a modern reinforced concrete structure with a flat roof. The side facing the courtyard was completely glazed.

The two-storey old building has a hipped roof and an attic gable. On the Giebelsüdseite The family crest of the Engl family ( former rule owner ) engraved with the wording: " Fear God, 1448, Tue law, Shy No 1848 ". The arcades of the outbuildings have now been glazed. Viewing is by the school operation only possible from the outside.
