Castlemaine (Victoria)

Castlemaine is located 38 km south of Bendigo and 119 km north- west of Melbourne in the state of Victoria in Australia, and is the administrative seat of Mount Alexander Shire.

Castlemaine was founded in 1851 in gold rush times. Within a short time it took 25,000 gold seekers in the city. The Theatre Royal Castlemaine 1856 opened and claims to be the oldest continuously used theater building in Australia with a performance of the famous dancer Lola Montez. Today it serves as the premiere cinema and concert stage.

Today the city has about 7,000 inhabitants.

Near the town there is a large and historically significant gold deposit, which is now protected under the name Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park as a national cultural monument.
