Location and Function

The region in Arad County is - inhabited since the Neolithic period - with short breaks. During the first half of the 1st millennium BC, the Dacians were based on both sides of the Mureş (Latin: Marisus ) first branches. From the 6th century BC Here, among others, the Scythians settled, the aufgingen later in the Dacians. End of the 4th century BC, Celtic tribes began to immigrate here, but were also rapidly assimilated by the Dacians.

The potentially occupied by a Auxiliarkohorte fort was located east of the present village of Bata on the left bank of the Mureş. Fort

The fort area is insufficiently explored. It was the first time in 1868, studied by Flóris Rómer, the founder of provincial Roman archeology in Hungary, then found 1976-1980 even smaller excavations search by István Ferenczi and Mircea Barbu instead. The base enclosure consisted of a wood and earth wall with an upstream ditch as an approximation obstacle. From the internal buildings, only traces could be detected. Discovered brick temple of Legio XIII Gemina seem to confirm AD at least the identification of the Fund place as a Roman military system of the 2nd century. Presumably, the fortification was built by a vexillation this Legion. From the castle itself no longer remains today are identifiable on the ground.
