Catania Metro

The Metropolitana di Catania is the metro in the city of Catania on the island of Sicily and the southernmost in Europe.

History

It was opened on 27 June 1999 as a standard gauge railway between Borgo and postage and replaced with the same curve, but above ground, extending range of ferrovia circumetnea with a track width of 950 millimeters. Remains of the former narrow gauge railway can still be found in the streets of Catania. The ferrovia circumetnea today operates both the " Metropolitana " and a 110 km long railway line in 950 mm track which surrounds the volcano Etna from Catania.

Route

The Metro connects the present terminus of the narrow gauge railway circumetnea in the suburb of Borgo with the port of Catania. It consists of a single line, is 3.8 km long and has six stations. The line runs underground between Borgo and Galatea, then she comes to the surface and travels along the coast to the harbor. About 1.8 kilometers of the route are outdoors. About two kilometers expanded to double track. Trains take about ten minutes for the distance.

Operation

The Metro operates from Monday to Friday from 07:00 bis 20:45 o `clock 15 -minute intervals. The tickets are valid on all tracks of the ferrovia circumetnea, but not in the urban bus operation.

Planning

The 0.9 km long section between Giovanni XXIII station Galatea and the train station is still under construction. Also, 1 km long section between the Giovanni XXIII station and the urban Metro Station Stesicoro is under construction. Furthermore, it is also the 3 km long section between the railway station and the Borgo Nesima station under construction. The extensions should go in the years 2008 and 2010. Similarly, extensions to the suburbs Mister Bianco ( 2014) and Paternò (2016 ) are provided. To the south, to 2014, the metro station Vittorio Emanuele and by 2016 the airport of Catania can be achieved.
