History

The origins of the church date back to 1312, as here, a first house of worship was mentioned. The building was destroyed during the Turkish siege. The current building dates from the 17th century. With the establishment of a separate diocese in 1912, she was charged by Pope Pius X to the cathedral. The fact that a cathedral was consecrated in this very small town, has its basis in the fact that about 80 % of the inhabitants of this place are Greek Catholic footmen, who were settled here in the 17th century. To date, the cathedral is determinative of everyday life in the small town. It was only in the restoration of 1876, the church took its present form, where it was converted into a three-aisled basilica. It also various Baroque items have been removed and replaced by eclectic.

Equipment

The building is 38 meters long and 21 meters wide, the tower 48 meters high and not, as usual, the oldest part of the church. 2010, the old clock tower was replaced.

The 1816 completed eleven meters high and seven meters wide iconostasis that separates the house from the lay choir, includes 54 icons and is considered one of the most important in Hungary. The version stated Miklós Jankovits, the pictures are from Mátyás Hittner and Janos Szucs. Unlike the Roman rite is called the altar not only the altar table, but the entire partitioned by the iconostasis room.

The iconostasis of the main altar, the side altars, the pulpit and the bishop's throne are made in Baroque style. The first and long time the only fresco by an unknown artist of 1780 shows the Trinity. Only after the restoration of 1876 were added more, so " The Last Supper " and " The Cross". During the restoration in 1937 the Byzantine frescoes were painted over but inferior quality with new neo-baroque frescoes. The entire facility, including the iconostasis was painted with oil- green color. After the Second World War, the National Office for Cultural Restoration of 1937 spoke to inferior quality, which is why the newer frescoes were removed. During socialism, the church was left to decay and only from the mid-1980s made tentative maintenance measures. From 2000 when a comprehensive restoration.
